Every year, someone with institutional authority curates the best astronomy photographs and presents them to the public as though authority itself were enough justification.
The assumption embedded in this act is older than the internet and goes mostly unexamined. Someone decides, has the criteria, knows what matters.
The person who decides still tends to work within the traditional hierarchy—professional observatories, academic institutions, established photography competitions. They measure significance by technical excellence, rarity, alignment with known scientific interests, and aesthetic composition.
But astronomy photography is no longer made primarily by the people with telescopes in the mountains. In 2023, a software engineer in New Zealand photographed Comet 3I/ATLAS—the interstellar visitor older than our entire solar system. It wasn't the professional observatories that captured the encounter first or best—it was citizen astronomers, amateurs with good equipment and better timing, who documented what fell into our visibility. The space telescopes themselves meanwhile produce millions of images annually, with NASA's James Webb generating more raw data in a month than Hubble accumulated in a decade.

The unspoken question is who maintains the authority to make that designation when the primary source of astronomical imagery has fundamentally shifted. If the curators were actually reflecting the field as it exists now—if they weighted contributions by source rather than by professional pedigree—the "best" list would look radically different. More amateur work. More images selected because they came from unexpected places, not because they confirmed established aesthetic or scientific values.
The present system doesn't quite exclude amateurs. It doesn't need to. It simply applies selection criteria developed when amateurs couldn't access the tools. The criteria persist unchanged, which means the institution persists unchanged, which means the reader looking at these photographs is seeing not an honest accounting of what astronomy actually produced this year. What looks familiar to the people who already had permission to decide.
