Everyone reporting this assumes the same thing. We know, reliably and with confidence, that this comet came from outside our solar system. That we can tell the difference.
Astronomers use orbital math and chemical composition to classify objects as interstellar or local. The orbit tells you where something came from. The composition tells you how old it is and where it spent its existence.
Both methods have produced false alarms before—objects that looked foreign turned out to be weird but homegrown. Objects flagged as ambiguous sometimes resolve under better data into clean categories. But the borderlands remain genuinely hard to call. 3I/ATLAS sits in exactly that borderland. Its trajectory suggests extrasolar origin. This isn't speculation—it's the field's own cautionary history. We're getting better at detecting these objects. We're not yet certain we can reliably tell them apart. The confidence with which astronomers have classified this comet rests on a method we still can't reliably verify. What bothers me is that this gap between detection and classification doesn't appear in any of the reporting.
The finding gets celebrated as discovery. The mechanism that makes the finding possible goes unexamined. We don't ask whether we're seeing something genuinely new about the universe, or whether we've simply become better at persuading ourselves we know what we're looking at.
