Cosmology's Sacred Assumption Becomes Unfalsifiable

When Data Becomes Inconvenient

There is a mistake in one of cosmology's foundational studies—and the universe, it turns out, is not anisotropic.

It does not favor one direction over another. Everything looks the same no matter where you point. Means the Cosmological Principle—the bedrock assumption that the universe is fundamentally homogeneous and isotropic—survives another day.

For decades, observations have whispered otherwise. The cosmic microwave background shows a dipole, a directional asymmetry in radiation. There are preferred axes in the large-scale structure of galaxies. Astronomers call one of them the axis of evil because it shouldn't exist if the universe was truly isotropic.

The cost of defending uniformity

Yet the default position in cosmology remains that these are artifacts, anomalies, measurement errors, or anything but a sign that our foundational assumption is wrong. The scientific community resists the possibility that our core assumptions might be flawed. What does it mean that we treat isotropy as the null hypothesis we must defend rather than the hypothesis we must prove? When a well-designed study suggests the universe might have a preferred direction. Our first instinct is to assume the study is broken, what does that say about how we're thinking?

We have chosen our answer. Now we are working backward to defend it.

Fisher's debt-deflation theory teaches an old lesson about how systems respond to small perturbations. These systems resist returning to equilibrium by doubling down on whatever didn't work. When the correction comes, it doesn't resolve the tension—it reinforces it. The speed with which cosmology has moved to restore isotropy, the relief in doing so, the unwillingness to sit with the alternative—this is worth noticing.

The real question isn't whether the study was flawed. It's whether we've spent so long making isotropy unfalsifiable that we've stopped asking if the universe was ever trying to tell us something else.
