Problem-solving that kept them alive in resource-constrained habitats for millennia.
What changed was not intelligence but scaling. A smaller body requires smaller neural tissue to maintain the same behavioral complexity—and this is not evidence of cognitive primitivity. It is evidence that brain size and cognitive capacity are not interchangeable measures.
If H. floresiensis experienced island dwarfism, then the small brain tells us nothing about the mind. The dietary evidence is just dietary evidence—it describes food preference in a particular ecology, not the ceiling of what was possible. So the real question becomes unsettling. What exactly are we measuring when we assume brain size reflects intelligence?
