But the solar panel solves for summer. The season when charging is easiest and the feeder sits idle because nobody is home to watch it. The problem it claims to solve is precisely when engagement doesn't matter.
The feeder dies in November, when people stop working outside and actually sit at windows engaging with the device they bought. The solar panel is useless. The clouds are overhead, the sun's angle is wrong, and the panel gathers maybe 40 percent of the charge it does in June.
A user then faces the very friction the device was meant to eliminate. They have to get a ladder, unscrew the mounting, dig out a micro-USB cable. Wait for it to charge indoors because outdoors it won't charge faster than it depletes. At that point, the person who wanted to watch cardinals and chickadees abandons the smart feeder. They buy a $20 passive feeder instead.
The solar panel is useless.
