One's Two-Year Silence Tests Mob Psycho's Survival

The Runway Disguised as Goodbye

Mob Psycho 100 is getting a 10-year anniversary short film, and this is not a normal milestone celebration.

Director Yuzuru Tachikawa and character designer Yoshimichi Kameda are reuniting to make it. The pattern to watch is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. After that series concluded in 2010, creator Hiromu Arakawa didn't disappear.

She came back with a series of OVAs, short films that expanded the Brotherhood universe without adding narrative weight. The machinery came back to life. Four years later Arakawa launched Fullmetal Alchemist The Revenge of Scar as a new theatrical film. This was a full pivot away from the concluded story.

The Runway Pattern

When an original manga creator reunites with the anime team years after a series ends, it signals one of two futures. Either the project tests whether the audience still holds the world in their hands, or it says goodbye with ceremony. The OVAs let Arakawa measure whether Brotherhood's ten years had cooled the audience's appetite—or whether people still wanted to live in that story. The answer gave her permission to build something new within the same universe rather than start from nothing. Mob Psycho 100 concluded its manga in 2022, the anime's third season wrapped that story in October 2022. Creator ONE and Tachikawa have been apart for two years.

The OVAs weren't a victory lap. They were a runway.

What matters is what happens after this. If ONE is planning a new Mob Psycho story, the short is a test of whether the connection still holds. If nothing arrives in the next eighteen months, this short marks the end of creator involvement in a franchise that defined a decade of anime—final-form closure, not anticipation. Watch whether ONE announces anything new by the end of 2025. That timeline will tell you whether this reunion is a prelude or a farewell.

In your own work, this is the lesson. The difference between a legacy project and a continuation often hinges not on the work itself but on whether the maker signals what comes next. Silence means something. So does speaking.
