Researchers have isolated a neuronal feature that appears unique to humans.

The cells are structurally distinct, and the implication feels obvious. Here is where our intelligence lives, the anatomical seat of what makes us think. The finding is real. The inference is the problem.

This exact move has happened before. In 1976, paleontologist Harry Jerison published work arguing that human intelligence derived from our uncommonly large cerebellum-to-brain ratio. The numbers were compelling and the logic was tight. We looked different at the cellular and organizational level, so our cognition must flow from that difference.

When anatomy isn't destiny

Then Neanderthals were measured, and they possessed cerebellum-to-brain ratios equal to or larger than ours. Their brains were not smaller and their proportions were not primitive. The same anatomical signature that supposedly powered modern human thought existed in a species that left no art, no complex tools, no evidence of symbolic culture. They had the hardware but lacked whatever software ran on it.

The mechanism at work here is temporal collapse. We observe a difference between modern humans and other living species today, and we assume that difference caused our cognitive leap. We never ask when the difference actually emerged. Did our neurons change before we invented language, agriculture, mathematics, and writing, or after? The anatomy could be a consequence of what we did with our minds, not the cause of it.

The same neurons apparently exist in archaic humans who never developed the behaviors we associate with higher cognition. Which means the neurons are necessary but not sufficient. They're part of a system. Identifying one part and calling it the explanation is the error that keeps repeating.

Watch for what happens next. You should observe whether this finding generates the same cycle of validation, alternative explanation, then quiet revision. The question worth asking isn't what our neurons can do. It's what else had to be true before those neurons meant anything.
