When Consensus Stops Asking Questions

Most claims about human perception rest on a foundation nobody bothers to examine.

We assume that when someone reports detecting infrasound—frequencies below 20 hertz, the threshold of normal hearing—they are processing sound. The ear, or the brain behind it, has picked up acoustic energy and converted it into conscious experience.

The actual discovery, scattered across decades of acoustics research and largely unexamined in popular coverage, is far messier. When you place a human subject in a controlled chamber and ask them whether they perceive a 15-hertz tone, many report yes—but the studies claiming this ability almost never isolate what is actually being detected. The skin and skeleton resonate at frequencies the inner ear cannot resolve. What researchers call infrasound perception is most likely somatosensory feeling, vibration moving through bone and tissue, misidentified as hearing because nobody bothered to separate the two.

When consensus stops questioning

In 1981, neuroscientist Fred Kellogg's team ran one of the cleanest such experiments. They delivered infrasound to subjects while precisely measuring vibration transmission through the body. When they blocked the tactile channel, the subjects' reported perception collapsed. When they allowed it, perception returned—the mechanism was never acoustic, it was always touch. Yet the field kept funding the dramatic version.

Superhearing sells. Funding flows toward proposals that claim special human capacity, toward subjects who possess abilities rather than toward papers that say we've been confusing one sensory channel with another. The narrative won and the science did not follow. What matters here is not the mechanism of infrasound itself—it is what happens to your judgment when an assumption becomes so natural you stop testing it.

You begin asking increasingly elaborate questions about a false premise. You build entire conceptual structures on ground that was never solid. You mistake clarity of language for clarity of fact. The reader who decides to pay closer attention to their own thinking will notice this happening constantly—in conversations, in their own work, in claims that sound so straightforward they seem immune to doubt. The infrasound question is a template for recognizing when consensus has simply stopped asking the right question.
