By the measure of museum conservation, this is remarkable. By the measure of what's actually happened, it may tell us something we've misunderstood entirely.
The unstated assumption in every account of this palette is simple. The pigments survived because Egyptian chemistry was superior. The palette is evidence of ancient mastery, but only if the colors we see now are fundamentally the same as the colors that existed then. And only if their preservation across centuries proves the robustness of the original formulation.
Museum conditions don't exist in nature. The palette has spent the last century in controlled temperature, consistent humidity, filtered light, and climate-stabilized storage. Environments the Egyptians never imagined, environments that didn't even exist before 1920. We're observing how these pigments perform in a sealed box maintained by people with Ph. D.
This is the gap between what the artifact preserves and what it proves. We judge longevity by what survives, not by what survives under favorable conditions. A novel that endures in print we call great. We almost never ask whether it survives because of its construction or because a publishing industry kept printing it. The palette's pigments may have lasted not because Egyptians were chemists, but because a museum, quite recently, decided to care.
