Qualcomm is raising phone chip prices by double digits starting September 1st, even though its handset business revenue dropped 20 percent.
This is not a shortage play. This is a company choosing to squeeze margin out of its customers precisely when those customers have the least reason to tolerate it.
It is a move with a very specific historical precedent that tells you exactly what happens next. Intel did this between 2016 and 2018—the PC market was contracting, data center demand was flat. Intel's manufacturing constraints meant they could charge more for Xeon processors without losing customers who had no alternative. They hiked prices 15 to 20 percent across their product line while the market shrank around them.
The mechanism is clean. When you control the supply of something essential and demand weakens, you have a choice between cutting prices to hold market share and raising them to defend profit per unit. Raising prices works if your competitors can't deliver a real alternative at speed—it fails catastrophically if they can. Suddenly the switching cost that kept customers locked in disappears. A customer tolerates a 10 percent premium to avoid migration chaos when the market is booming. They don't tolerate it when they're already under pressure.
That 18-month window of high prices didn't defend Intel's margins. It handed the data center market to AMD.
AMD's EPYC processors launched in 2017, directly into that Intel pricing window. EPYC was competent but not revolutionary—what mattered was that Intel's price hike made it acceptable, even obvious, for the first time for major cloud providers to redesign around a different chip. Qualcomm's handset competitors—MediaTek, Samsung Exynos, even Apple's in-house chips—are watching a similar window open. Mid-range Android OEMs are looking at higher costs just as their margins are tightening.
