Academy Kept Its Gatekeeper, Diversity Never Followed

Barnaby·Thursday, July 30, 2026 Edition
When Kindness Cannot Change Math

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has re-elected Lynette Howell Taylor as president for another term, with no visible internal opposition or alternative candidates surfacing.

The absence of friction reads as a mandate. It is actually a bet—that a legacy institution can deliver structural diversity gains through leadership continuity and incremental reform within existing systems.

Museum boards made this same bet from 2015 through 2020. They re-elected sitting leadership on diversity mandates, implemented voting reforms and membership rules designed to broaden access and representation. What followed was staff revolt, donor friction. The discovery that structural gatekeeping cannot be reformed from within by refining the gate.

The gatekeeping paradox

The Guggenheim learned it. The Met learned it. The Whitney learned it—that incremental change approved by the institution's existing power holders is not the same thing as giving away that power. The Academy faces the same ledger.

The Academy cannot simultaneously keep its prestige function intact and deliver genuine institutional diversity.

You can have the gatekeeping. You cannot have both the gatekeeping and a different answer to "who decides." Taylor may be an excellent president. The problem is not her—it is trusting that excellence in the chair will move the chair itself. In your own career, watch for moments when you promote the kind person into a structure designed for extraction, then wait to be surprised when kindness does not change the math. The structure does not care about your intentions.
