Google just released its 3D emoji designs as open-source reference materials, complete with the methodology behind them.
The company's bet is clear enough — if competitors use these templates, visual language becomes consistent across platforms. Fragmentation collapses, and the emoji behaves the same whether you're on Android or iPhone or anywhere else.
This assumption has a precise historical precursor. In the 1990s, the Unicode Consortium faced an identical problem with Han characters. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean all share overlapping character sets, but the characters looked different across vendors and platforms. The solution was "Han unification". One approved character, one approved form, and one reference implementation would theoretically be adopted by everyone.
It didn't work. Or rather, it worked in the technical sense and nowhere else that mattered. Apple ignored the unification recommendations for cultural reasons and redesigned the emoji gun from a revolver to a water pistol in 2016, even though Unicode had approved firearms as semantically distinct from toy weapons. The eggplant persisted as a symbol for sex despite official intentions, and Samsung made the burger bun different colors. Each platform kept differentiating because differentiation is what matters.
Your emoji is not the user's emoji. Your emoji is the product.
Google's open-sourcing assumes competitors value consistency more than control. The historical record suggests they don't. Apple will redesign its emoji library according to its own brand logic, Samsung will make choices that feel distinctly Samsung, and Google's reference designs will be used the way most open standards are used by vendors who want to appear cooperative. Superficially, selectively, only where it doesn't interfere with differentiation. The visual language belongs to the company that controls how people see themselves and each other on your platform.
The mechanism matters because you see it everywhere in your own work. The client wants your design to match an open standard. You know the standard exists so that vendors can claim compliance while remaining visually distinct. You're watching a system that uses coordination language to protect competition. That's not a failure of standards.
