NASA is building a space traffic controller for the moon because we have become a species that needs one.
The Gateway spaceport isn't arriving because the moon got crowded overnight — it's arriving because NASA already solved this exact problem fifty years ago and is now, with theatrical solemnity, solving it again at altitude.
In the late 1970s, low Earth orbit became congested as satellites, space stations, military assets. Debris competed for the same orbital neighborhoods. American and Soviet authorities couldn't coordinate in any traditional sense, so they invented a parallel system to what hummed beneath the clouds — the FAA's air traffic control network. Had spent two decades learning how to pack thousands of aircraft into shared airspace without collision.
It worked by standardizing corridors, sequencing approach patterns. Assigning altitudes and vectors from the ground, treating every participant as subordinate to central authority. When orbital traffic threatened to become a disaster, NASA imported that model wholesale. It worked so thoroughly that we forgot it was a solution, the way you treat plumbing as normal until the pipes burst and you remember, briefly, that someone had to invent the entire system. The Gateway station will do the same thing for lunar operations. A physical hub near the moon where arriving missions check in, get routed to designated landing zones. Coordinate with other operations, the moon's version of Atlanta traffic control.
Different altitude, different physics, same organizational problem. The surprise is that this isn't technically novel. It's bureaucratic competence applied to a new altitude. What changes now is scale and actors. Air traffic control works because the FAA has monopoly enforcement over U. S. airspace and treaties over international routes. The moon has no FAA. SpaceX, Blue Origin, NASA, the Chinese space program. A dozen smaller nations are all arriving simultaneously, and the Gateway can sequence traffic perfectly and still fail if three actors simply ignore it. That's the variable worth watching. It's whether coordination infrastructure matters when power is genuinely distributed.
