Observation
We're monitoring the small crimes we can see.
Drones catch illegal fireworks now, and a shipwreck becomes an accidental nature preserve because we looked at it. The pattern is identical: the moment we develop the technology to watch something, we watch it. The moment we watch it, we change it. But we're so focused on what the surveillance prevents or reveals that we're not asking what it costs us to live in a world where the small, unmeasured things are disappearing.
