Spiritfarer Measures Love in Departure Readiness
Spiritfarer
The Comfort Meter

The ferry's resource loop is a confession disguised as a system.

You harvest, you cook, you gift — and the spirits respond with incremental comfort increases that function like a countdown timer on the relationship itself.

This isn't metaphorical. The game literally tracks how 'ready' each spirit is to leave, displayed as a visible meter. You are not managing their well-being. You are managing their departure velocity.

Spiritfarer — The World It Makes
What Departure Demands

Consider the meal economy specifically. A spirit asks for a specific dish — you gather ingredients from the farm, hunt sea creatures, forage on islands, stand at the stove with actual cooking animations and ingredient combinations, then present the meal so the spirit's comfort rises by three points. Repeat this twenty times with variations, and what the game teaches through repetition is that intimacy is a production problem to be solved. Love becomes the efficient output of a well-run supply chain. A spirit only leaves once their comfort hits maximum — so the more you love them, the more meals and gifts and conversations you provide, the faster they disappear. The game has mechanically inverted every intuition about attachment.

Indifference would extend their presence — but devotion guarantees their erasure. The mechanics argue something harder than acceptance of loss: that the entire value of emotional labor in your relationships is measured by how effectively it produces your own solitude.

Notice the specific math

Load any spirit's comfort meter in the game and screenshot it next to the total playtime you've spent gathering resources for them—you'll see the actual exchange rate between your hours and their leaving.
