The Shimmer doesn't transform Kane into a monster overnight.

It refacts his DNA gradually — producing a version of him that breathes like a plant, bleeds like phosphorescence, and speaks in echoes of his own voice, a being that follows the rules of human biology the way a glitched rendering follows the rules of physics.

This is CRISPR's actual threat, not the science-fiction version. We have the precision tool — but we don't have the manual for what happens when you edit a gene that does three jobs across different tissues, or when your edit interacts with variants in the population you're treating that nobody sequenced first.

Elegance Before Understanding

The film shows this in the autopsy scene where Lena stares at Kane's transformed heart, which should not be alive, understanding that the Shimmer didn't break biology. It rewrote it according to alien rules that just happened to be internally consistent. CRISPR practitioners face exactly this: our edits work and the organisms we create are viable, yet what we don't know is whether the cascade of pleiotropic effects—one gene controlling expression in the heart, the immune system, the retinas—will manifest in year five or year fifteen, in 10 percent of patients or one percent.
