Why Engineers Keep Losing

The film shows this repeatedly: the moment of hesitation before movement, the slight desynchronization between thought and action in the game world. That friction is death to immersion, and it's also unfixable in silicon because silicon operates on different electrical principles than neurons do. Look at the game console itself — the way it requires biological feeding, the way it can sicken and die.

The pod fails not because it's poorly designed but because it's *alive*, which means it has constraints — it needs maintenance, it can reject its host, these are features, not bugs. Neuralink and its competitors are still trying to build a bridge between two incompatible systems using wires and implants, but Cronenberg already knew the bridge has to be made of the same meat on both sides.

Rewatch the scene where the game pod first attaches to Allegra's body around 24 minutes in, then read Cronenberg's 1999 interview with Sight & Sound where he discusses the biological logic of the design—it's the only place he actually explains what the thing is supposed to *do*.
