Agent Smith explains it plainly in the interrogation room: humans generate about 25,000 BTUs of thermal energy, making them biological batteries — but the real insight isn't thermal, it's that the machines kept us alive specifically because running conscious processes requires something a mere calculator cannot simulate cheaply: the substrate of embodied cognition itself.
Neuroscientists studying neural efficiency have recently confirmed what the Wachowskis seemed to intuit: a conscious mind solving novel problems in real time burns metabolic energy at scales that pure computation doesn't require. The brain is massively parallel and embodied in ways that make consciousness computationally expensive to replicate, which means Tank, still jacked in and running a small ship — he exists in the simulation but without full consciousness — confirms the film's own logic: keep the substrate but reduce the load.
Here's where the film accidentally sabotages itself.
