The Charm system doesn't let you pause and optimize.
You sit in a boss arena—say, against Hornet or the Radiance—and realize mid-fight that your current loadout isn't working, forcing you to choose between dying or burning precious time in the menu while partially exposed to damage.
Most games make menus instantaneous and external—a pause screen that pauses the world. Hollow Knight keeps you partially exposed, and that friction is intentional because it means players must plan charm loadouts before entering areas, not fiddle with them inside.

Planning requires cognitive work done outside the arena, and the charm architecture forces a harsh economy: either you precommit to a strategy (mental work upfront) or you improvise under pressure (mental work in real-time, with consequences). There's no free lunch. Even the simple act of reading a charm's effect—checking what Steady Body or Sharp Shadow actually does—requires opening a menu that eats attention, so new players often don't fully understand their tools because the interface actively discourages exploration during play.
This is radical because it argues the opposite of what every modern interface designer believes: that removing friction makes games better. Hollow Knight says friction itself communicates stakes—you don't feel resource-scarce because numbers drop, but because thinking costs time, and time kills you.
Play through Hornet Sentinel (the late-game rematch) and count how many times you open your charm menu during the fight versus how many times you died because you were mid-menu when she attacked—that ratio is the entire argument.
