The Machine requires a pilot.

Not because the aliens designed it that way—Ellie never confirms this—but because the screenplay cannot imagine information traveling without a body attached to it.

The aliens built a transportation device disguised as a communication device, and no one questions this design choice because it mirrors how humans still think about knowledge in an era when email exists but doesn't feel real. A radio signal arrives with blueprints, and humanity builds the Machine — but the blueprints alone aren't enough to send a message back, someone must be physically present inside the device at the moment of transmission.

The film offers no technical reason for this requirement. The answer is psychological: 1997 hadn't accepted that presence could be disembodied. The Machine operates through wormhole physics, yet Ellie experiences linear time, sensory input, a constructed environment — and she meets her father because the aliens didn't need to do this, they could have transmitted pure information, but the screenplay requires her to witness something, to be there, to return with testimony.

Knowledge without physical presence felt like hallucination. We built systems that generate language without bodies, knowledge without witnesses — and we still feel cheated, even though Contact was wrong about what aliens would do and accurate about what we needed to believe.
