K spends 2049 minutes searching for proof that he matters—that his memories, his devotion to Wallace, his capacity to love might be *real* rather than implanted—but the actual 2049 that emerged shows something worse: nobody needed K to have a soul.

They needed him to *appear* functional, compliant, and replaceable. The replicant labor force in the film serves exactly the role generative AI serves today.

Wallace doesn't torture K because he suspects K is conscious and wants to break that consciousness. He deploys K because K is *useful regardless of his interiority*. Watch the scene where K reports to Wallace in the penthouse: Wallace is blind, unreachable, speaking in aphorisms about creation—he never asks if K is suffering, only what K has retrieved.

The real extraction happens elsewhere: in the orphanage sequences, in the Wallace corporation's breeding programs, in the systematic use of replicants as police enforcers who absorb the moral weight of law enforcement so humans don't have to. The film understood that synthetic workers would make resource scarcity *manageable*, yet it never quite grasped that the cruelty wouldn't require believing they could suffer—it only required not asking.
