Predators Invented the Arms Race

Ancient sea worms called Wiwaxia wore jaws made of chitin hardened with zinc and other metals, transforming muscle tissue into something closer to steel than flesh.

That discovery is real, and it matters. But the research documenting these biometal teeth establishes far more than a curiosity about Cambrian predators—it rewrites what we thought kicked off the evolutionary arms race that built the animal kingdom itself.

The conventional story holds that prey animals evolved hard shells and spiny exoskeletons first, then predators developed stronger jaws to crack them open. But it cannot be right if Wiwaxia's mineralized jaws show up in the fossil record before the animals worth eating developed any significant armor.

When predators write the rules

If predators were already metallizing their teeth before prey had reason to, then the causal chain inverts—predatory biomineralization came first. It was not a response to prey hardness, it was the demand that created hardness as a survival strategy. This is how arms races actually work in systems thinking, not in popular biology. The system does not respond to a threat that is already present. It generates the threat and then pressure reorganizes around it.

When the RAND Health Insurance Experiment randomly offered people free healthcare in the 1970s, patients did not respond by using more medicine because medicine was suddenly obviously valuable—they had simply never known it was available. Once they knew, demand became insatiable. The predator's jaw was the free healthcare. Prey biomineralization was not a logical defense against a danger that had always existed. It was a cascade effect triggered by a tool that changed what was suddenly possible for the organism holding it.

Wiwaxia did not inherit this strategy from older predators. It invented it, alone, in the Cambrian. And the moment that invention worked, every animal in that ecosystem could no longer assume its body was adequate. That single innovation in one predator's mouth became the pressure that forced an entire biosphere to rebuild itself.
