Researchers at Duke University showed captive macaques 3-D video avatars of other macaques. The animals responded with sustained attention—until the simulation grew too perfect, triggering visible distress.
The finding circulated as confirmation that primate brains share our evolutionary revulsion to the nearly-authentic fake. But the experiment measured only whether macaques prefer photorealistic avatars to crude ones—not whether they detect social inauthenticity.
We treat the uncanny valley as a sophisticated perceptual phenomenon—the ability to recognize that something is wrong, that it violates social authenticity in a way that triggers ancestral alarm systems. We've lived with humans our whole lives and know what they should feel like, sound like, move like.
Macaques have no experience with videos of any kind. They have zero evolutionary history with 2-D or 3-D simulations and have never encountered anything that tried to fool them into thinking a screen was another monkey. When they respond to high-fidelity avatars, we can't know whether they're detecting social inauthenticity or simply responding to sufficiently-detailed visual input the way any pattern-matching system responds to high-resolution data—with more engagement, more processing, more attention.
Response isn't cognition. A Skinner box rat responds to variables it has learned to navigate, but the rat isn't philosophizing about authenticity. This distinction surfaces everywhere you make decisions based on how people respond to something—you create, pitch, present. Interpret engagement as understanding. But you could be measuring only detail, not meaning. Only stimulus, not cognition.
The avatar seems to work until you realize your audience might simply lack the learned skepticism to know it's a trick.
