A creature half a billion years old may have favored its right side.
That asymmetry—that tiny, ancient preference—reveals something about how certainty itself fails us. The organism in question is Markuelia, a millimeter-scale animal from the Cambrian explosion, preserved in Chinese rock formations.
Researchers examined its mouth, which curves slightly rightward, and from that curve inferred handedness. But here is where the inference breaks down. We cannot watch Markuelia move or observe it choosing. We can only look at one frozen moment and read intention backward into it.
This is what anthropologist Émile Durkheim called the problem of social facts. The danger of mistaking a pattern for proof of causation. We see the curve and assume behavior. We see the behavior and assume will. The same trap catches neuroscientists studying human brain lateralization.
What Markuelia actually shows us is how easily a single preserved angle becomes a narrative. The fossil did not choose to curl that way for our benefit. It curled, and we saw intention in the geometry. This matters because you do the same thing with your own decisions. You feel yourself choosing to work on the creative project at dawn and interpret that as preference, as your authentic creative rhythm. But the choice may be simpler, you have no meetings then.
The question is not whether Markuelia was right-handed. The question is whether we can ever look at a pattern—in a fossil, in a behavior, in our own lives—and know what created it rather than merely assuming.
