When Correlation Hides What Matters

A team of geneticists sequenced the DNA of Asian house shrews and found something that looked like a map.

The rodents had spread across Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and into East Africa over roughly two millennia. The expansion patterns matched known routes of human migration.

The researchers concluded that the shrew's journey was a historical record written in its own genome—a living archive that could help validate or rewrite how we understand human movement across continents. The logic seems clean. Commensal animals travel with us, sheltering in grain stores and hiding in cargo. Their genetics should reflect our own patterns of dispersal.

When Commerce Masquerades as Movement

But shrews don't expand their range because of human geography. They expand because grain gets stored in concentrated quantities and because trade infrastructure means surplus can travel. Intensive cereal agriculture in Southeast Asia didn't peak until the 5th and 6th centuries, while long-distance grain trade via maritime Silk routes didn't become systematic until well after. Yet many human migrations scholars date to the earlier Bronze Age or first centuries CE—the shrew populations would have followed the grain infrastructure, not the initial human expansion.

The real problem isn't that the science is fraudulent. It's that the correlation was irresistible, and irresistibility isn't evidence. When something fits too neatly with what you already believe, the first move isn't to celebrate. It's to ask what you've stopped looking at.
