A study finds the brains of multilingual people are structurally younger than monolingual peers—less atrophy, sharper minds.
But the unstated assumption runs deeper than the data can reach. These people chose to become multilingual because they were already the kind of people whose brains stay younger anyway. This sounds like a small distinction.
It is not. Neuroplasticity—the brain literally rewiring itself through the act of learning—is not the same as selection bias. Selection bias is what happens when motivated, educated people with stable childhoods and time to study gravitate toward multilingualism.
The Perry Preschool Project teaches us something useful about this problem. Researchers gave intensive early education to poor Black children in Michigan during the 1960s and tracked them for decades. Those children outearned peers, graduated more, went to prison less—magnificent results. But the most counterintuitive finding stopped everyone. The intervention raised their earnings and life outcomes, yet it did not raise their IQ.
The cognitive advantage evaporated. What remained was everything else—motivation, expectations, someone who believed in them. The multilingualism research faces the same crack in its logic. Do polyglots age slower because learning grammar reshapes their neural tissue, or because people with resources, curiosity. Educational privilege learn languages in the first place? Because their lives at forty look different?
The study measures correlation among people who already chose to learn languages. That choice itself is loaded with every confounding variable that makes a life go better. The scan cannot untangle that. And until someone can separate the effect of the language itself from the effect of being the kind of person who learns languages, the finding tells you almost nothing about what you should actually do.
