A research team finally captured video of a barreleye fish in the deep ocean.
The creature has a transparent head and tubular eyes that point upward. For three decades, scientists studied these fish by hauling dead ones to the surface—measuring anatomy, analyzing stomach contents, examining where they're found in the water column.
Now we have footage. The assumption built into that achievement is obvious. Seeing is understanding, direct observation equals knowledge. Watching the thing move through its world teaches you what you couldn't learn from a corpse.
The barreleye is functionally a tube with eyes that drifts and rises and falls with the daily migration cycle of prey. It rotates its eyes upward to track bioluminescent silhouettes passing above. That's the behavioral repertoire—and nobody needs video to confirm this. The stomach contents of dead specimens already told us what it eats, the depth of its capture sites already mapped where it lives. The eye anatomy already explained how vision works under extreme pressure where light is almost extinct.
