When sea lamprey larvae were first studied systematically in the 1960s and 70s, researchers classified non-feeding individuals as developmental stages rather than ecological variants. A lamprey that didn't parasitize was simply a lamprey that hadn't matured yet, an assumption so complete that filter-feeding populations discovered in subsequent decades were folded into existing species descriptions as anomalies rather than what they actually were — evidence of sampling bias so profound it became invisible.
The mechanism is simple. Parasitic lampreys advertise themselves through feeding damage and tissue marks, making them easy to collect, measure, and name. Non-feeding forms leave no obvious scar and hide in the ecological background. We built an entire taxonomy around the loud cases and called it complete. The Australian discovery doesn't introduce a dietary exception. It confirms we never had a complete picture of lamprey feeding strategies at all.
