The assumption underneath is straightforward. A raccoon navigates obstacles, a mother stays near her young, therefore raccoons possess sophisticated cognition and maternal care.
The logic feels airtight because we have collapsed two separate questions into one. We have mistaken adaptation for insight. In animal cognition research, the frontier question is not whether creatures survive or even whether they care for offspring. It's whether we can distinguish learned problem-solving from instinctive behavior triggered by stress.
