A new study investigating how people choose friends arrives with a binary question built into its frame. Is it better to have many casual friendships or a few close ones?
The question assumes you're working with a fixed allocation — time and emotional energy are finite, so the theory goes. Invest deeply in a few people or spread yourself thin across many. The premise that makes this question sensible is actually false.
The unstated assumption is that friendship quality and quantity are competing for the same scarce resource. They're treated as inverse variables, a trade-off where more of one necessarily means less of the other. This seems obvious because it mirrors how we think about everything else in constrained lives.
But it doesn't work that way. Decades of social network research, from longitudinal studies tracking people across years, consistently shows that individuals with large friend groups do not have shallower close relationships. The correlation the trade-off assumes barely exists. Some people maintain broad networks and deep bonds simultaneously, while others have few friends but keep them at arm's length. The capacity for breadth and the capacity for depth operate independently.
You cannot optimize between two things if they don't actually compete. Asking "should I have many casual friends or few close ones?" is like asking "should I have good eyesight or good hearing?" as though fixing one damages the other. The real question underneath is why some people build broad networks while others don't, and why some nurture closeness while others maintain distance. Those are separate design problems with separate solutions.
