It was a bird exquisitely adapted to an island ecosystem where it had no predators and therefore no evolutionary pressure to be paranoid. The problem is not the finding—it's that we've seen this exact reversal before, and it never actually reverses anything.
In 1803, after British colonizers had already decimated the Aboriginal population of Tasmania through disease and deliberate violence, a new consensus emerged. The surviving Tasmanians were declared cognitively primitive. Their brains were smaller, their reasoning inferior, their culture evidence of evolutionary stagnation. These claims appeared in scientific journals and respectable books because they served an essential function. They made the catastrophe look inevitable rather than chosen.
The dodo followed the same narrative arc, compressed into a century instead of a decade. The bird was unfamiliar to Europeans when they arrived in Mauritius in the 1600s and was simply described, eaten, used for decades. Only after the dodo was already gone—extinguished by human hunting and the animals humans brought with them—did it become stupid in European accounts. Stories accumulated, jokes formed. The bird's inability to escape humans got reframed as a failure of intelligence rather than what it actually was. It was a completely rational absence of fear when nothing on the island had ever tried to kill you.
It was about our need for the things we destroy to have deserved it.
This is how post-hoc rationalization works. The outcome comes first. The explanation that makes it seem deserved comes after, written by the people who benefited from the outcome.
Neuroscience can map a dodo's brain perfectly and never touch this mechanism because the stupidity myth was never really about the dodo's actual cognition. It was about our need for the things we destroy to have deserved it. That need doesn't vanish when a scan proves the victim was smarter than we said. It finds another target.
