Researchers at the University of Wisconsin observed that these flies enter a dormant state called diapause before the cold arrives. This suggests an internal seasonal timer independent of any external calendar.
The discovery feels clean—the flies possess an innate mechanism, a clock, mystery solved. Except the clock might be a ghost in the machine created by the laboratory itself. The field assumes without saying it that an internal timer is more fundamental than external detection. But forty years of chronobiology research has never settled this question.
