# The Honeyguide Wants Your Attention. But Does It Want To Communicate?
A honeyguide bird leads a human to a beehive. A cleaner fish inspects parasites on a shark's gills, both animals benefiting. These are real observations, documented and repeatable. But there's a gap between what we see and what we name it.
The field calls this "cross-species communication." The term assumes something sharp and particular: that the honeyguide intends to convey information, that the shark understands the fish's presence as signal rather than mere proximity. We assume the animals share enough intentionality across their species boundaries for the word "communication" to apply instead of the messier alternatives—synchronized behavior, opportunistic exploitation, signal hijacking.
But here's what gets buried: we have no reliable way to distinguish intentional signaling from behavioral synchrony that looks intentional from the outside. A honeyguide that evolved to call in certain patterns near hives isn't necessarily communicating with humans. Humans learned to follow the call because following it leads to food. The bird keeps calling because calling near hives attracts attention and access to bee larvae. Both animals benefit. Neither necessarily knows what the other intends.
This matters because the assumption shapes how we understand evolution itself. If we misidentify exploitation or mere correlation as communication, we're building stories about cooperation that may be stories about differential access to resources, or about one species learning to read signals that were never meant to convey information across species lines.
The real pattern isn't that animals communicate across species. It's that successful species learn to exploit the behavioral patterns of other species. Sometimes this is mutualistic. Often it's not. The clarity feels good. "Communication" is a word with agency built into it. "Behavioral synchrony that produces a net gain for both parties" is uglier and less comforting.
But it might be closer to what's actually happening. And if it is, then every example we've catalogued as interspecies communication becomes something else entirely: evidence not of shared intentionality but of how relentlessly species optimize for the signals other species produce, whether those signals were aimed at them or not.
