The Explanation Was Always Wrong

For twenty years, nutritionists told you to drink water with meals—not after, not before. During—based on physics that turned out to be physiology dressed in the wrong clothes.

A recent study found that people who drank water with food actually consumed more calories over the course of a meal, not fewer. The real shock is what it reveals about the advice itself. The mechanism we've been teaching was never what made it work, if it worked at all.

We assumed without testing that stretch receptors in the stomach wall are the primary signal telling you to stop eating. Full stomach equals full brain. But the study suggests something else is happening—water consumed with food appears to slow gastric emptying, the rate at which the stomach pushes nutrients into the small intestine.

The explanation was always wrong

If that's true, water doesn't create satiety by expanding the stomach. It extends the window in which food remains in the digestive tract, keeping nutrients circulating and delaying the metabolic signals that would normally terminate hunger. The mechanism was backwards. Not the advice, necessarily—the explanation we built around it.

The advice survives even as the reasoning corrodes. What should trouble you is not whether water with meals helps or hurts your diet—it's that you've been following an instruction whose actual mechanics nobody understood. You trusted the logic when the logic was ornamental. The question now is simpler and harder. How many other practices in your own deliberate life are you maintaining for reasons you've never actually verified. The surface explanation was coherent enough to stop asking?
