# The 50-Meter Problem
Greater gliders can glide 50 meters. That is the finding. Not 80 meters, not the vague "considerable distance" that appeared in field guides for decades. Fifty. Australian researchers measured it. The animals are real. The trees are real. The measurement is real.
What the finding doesn't explain is why we were wrong. Not wrong in the way science is usually wrong—a hypothesis that didn't hold. Wrong in a stranger way: nobody had actually measured it. For generations of wildlife managers, gliding range existed as a kind of intuited fact, something everyone knew the way people know that ships disappear bottom-first over the horizon, true enough to never question. When the actual data came, it contradicted the assumption so completely that the gap itself became the real discovery.
Here is what matters. Australia's remaining eucalyptus forests are fragmented. Between protected reserves sit cleared farmland, roads, housing developments. Wildlife agencies permit corridors of forest—narrow strips meant to connect isolated populations so animals can move between them. These corridors are typically 60 to 80 meters wide. They look functional. They satisfy the metric.
If a greater glider needs 80 meters to cross from one forest to another and the corridor provides 80 meters, the math suggests survival. But 50-meter gliding range into a 60-meter gap means the jump fails halfway. The corridor stops functioning as connection and becomes something worse: a trap that draws animals out of safety with no return route. Populations that seemed networked are actually isolated. Protected areas that appeared ecologically linked are ecological islands.
This is the kind of error that doesn't announce itself. The corridors exist. They are wider than nothing. They satisfy the visual requirement of looking like they might work. But they fail the only test that matters: whether a breeding population can actually persist across fragmented land.
When you build a system on an unmeasured assumption, everything that follows—the policy, the permit, the cleared land between reserves—becomes a logical consequence of that single gap. You only recognize the error when you measure. Until then, you are managing a landscape based on a story you never tested. That is harder to admit than being simply wrong.
