The public health narrative is simple. Events during a blackout are never written down at all. They vanish not because you cannot find them but because they were never recorded. This implication follows naturally — if you black out, you lose the opportunity to learn from what happened.
But some researchers have found that drinkers often encode events perfectly well while intoxicated. They remember the jokes, the confrontations, the choices — and the problem emerges later, in sobriety. State-dependent memory research suggests that what we call a blackout might not be an encoding failure at all. A retrieval failure, locked away in contexts the sober brain cannot access.
This distinction unmakes the entire logic of consequences as deterrent. If memories form but cannot be retrieved, then blackouts are not proof that you failed to learn. The event happened to your mind, and your sober self simply cannot find it. The educational mechanism we assumed was absent may have been working all along, hidden inside the neurological gap between intoxicated encoding and sober retrieval. Yet the field has not settled which picture is correct. Public health messaging treats the encoding-failure version as established fact.
