They showed chess players boards mid-game for a few seconds, then asked them to reconstruct the positions from memory. Masters recalled nearly every piece. Novices recalled almost none. The difference vanished when the pieces were placed randomly. Because random positions contain no patterns to perceive. Masters weren't memorizing. They were seeing chunks of structured meaning the novices couldn't access yet.
