Theo Varga had done this for eleven years, every morning, one training position before breakfast. On a cold January he sat down, ran the checklist, wrote his evaluation — and a grandmaster friend, glancing over his shoulder, named the winning idea in about four seconds. Theo had looked at the same board for six minutes.
The board doesn't change. What changes is the eye that reads it. This is what separates genuine expertise from accumulated habit: the expert doesn't retrieve a solution, they perceive a structure that makes one path obvious and others invisible before conscious reasoning starts. A radiologist sees a shadow as a lesion; the medical student sees a shadow. A jazz musician hears a chord change as an invitation; the beginner hears noise. Think about the proposal you revise every time before sending, the conversation you plan out sentence by sentence, the spreadsheet you approach the same cautious way you did three years ago. You are still running Theo's checklist. The hour before that meeting, instead of adding another layer of preparation, try watching what you attend to first — the thing your eye goes to before the procedure kicks in. That reflex, however undeveloped, is where the mental representation lives. Feeding it, naming it, is how it grows.
You do not get better at hard things by doing them more. You get better when doing them more changes what hard looks like. That shift is quiet, and it does not announce itself. One morning the checklist feels unnecessary, and you will barely notice.
