When they showed masters a mid-game position for five seconds, the masters could reconstruct it almost perfectly. Novices could not. But when the pieces were placed randomly — no real game structure — the masters lost their advantage entirely. They weren't memorizing positions. They were seeing patterns the novices couldn't yet see. The skill lived in the perception, not in the recall.
