The T70S arrived with the right narrative—a British engineering team stretched plant-based composite materials across a chassis designed for competitive racing. Not a concept vehicle, not a museum piece, but something you could enter in an actual event.

The headlines wrote themselves. They proclaimed sustainable motorsports as a genuine alternative to carbon fiber and a future arriving now. The numbers suited the story perfectly—lighter than some traditional composites, recyclable at end of life, the kind of specificity that makes innovation feel real instead of aspirational.

Why materials fail to scale

But this is how carbon fiber told its story too. In 1981, McLaren put a carbon fiber monocoque into Formula One—lighter, stronger, the future. Every team would follow, the logic went, because physics doesn't negotiate. By 1985, every front-running car used it.

It cares about the junction between promising technology and actual infrastructure.

The materials revolution was complete, and carbon fiber entered permanent adoption in elite racing. What most retellings leave out is the next forty years. Carbon fiber never scaled to production cars the way anyone predicted—it remained expensively confined to specialists and show models. Regulatory barriers emerged and manufacturing costs hit a ceiling nobody quite explains. The material that was supposed to transform automotive manufacturing transformed exactly one thing: how we race cars that almost nobody drives.

The parallel isn't that plant fibers will fail. It's that the mechanism doesn't care about the material. It cares about the junction between promising technology and actual infrastructure. Between what works at the edge and what scales across the middle.

The one variable that might interrupt the pattern is the pressure we're under now. Carbon fiber arrived into a world with time. Plant fibers arrive into one without it. Whether that pressure actually rewires the adoption curve, or just accelerates us toward the same confined future with better intentions, is the only question worth following.
