Motorola just announced the Edge 70 Max supports 25W wireless charging and called it a first. But Google's Pixel 10 Pro XL already does this.
This is not a product story. It's a visibility crisis wearing a spec sheet.
OnePlus spent 2018 through 2021 building an identity around charging speed, pushing 30W, then 65W, then 120W wired charging until the feature became their brand signature. Reviewers compared phones on this axis and it mattered in purchasing conversations. But then the market plateaued, with Apple settling at 20W and Samsung maxing out at 25W wireless, making the feature table-stakes instead of differentiator.
By 2023, OnePlus had quietly abandoned the charging wars entirely because the speed advantage no longer moved phones. Everyone's customers could charge fast enough that the difference felt invisible. The structural pattern mirrors what happened with camera megapixels in the 2010s, when each manufacturer claimed "first" at 12MP, then 16MP, then 48MP as if the number itself mattered, when the real work happened in lens quality, sensor size. Computational processing. The megapixel race was a proxy war that let companies claim superiority on a chart while actual technology lagged. It didn't stop because anyone solved it — it stopped because consumers stopped caring about the number.
Wireless charging speed is heading toward that same dead end because the real constraint isn't wattage but heat dissipation and battery longevity. Faster charging degrades battery health faster, and at 25W versus 15W the practical difference in daily life is minutes. Not meaningful minutes, not decision-making minutes. Motorola is visible in spec comparisons now, but they'll lose that visibility in eighteen months when every phone supports the same wattage. By then they'll need a different story about power they won't have ready.
