Swift is a twenty-year-old telescope doing something its designers never anticipated. It was built to last a decade. It has lasted twice that, but solar storms in recent years have degraded its orbit. NASA calculates it will reenter Earth's atmosphere sometime this year, burning up on the way down.
The unstated choice underneath the "emergency rescue" framing is whether a spacecraft past its design life but still scientifically valuable deserves the risk and cost of salvage, or whether letting it die on schedule is the cleaner engineering decision. That choice depends entirely on whether you believe a 320-million-dollar instrument producing publishable science counts as worth saving. It sounds obvious. It is not.

A controlled deorbit—intentionally bringing Swift down over ocean where it cannot hit populated land—is safer than attempting a rendezvous with a spacecraft in unpredictable orbital decay. It is cheaper. It requires no new mission, no second spacecraft, no coordination in the dark. It is what you do when you accept that machines end. What you do not do is convince yourself you had no choice about it.
NASA's decision to attempt the rescue with Link reveals whose preference won. The astrophysics community prevailed because losing Swift mid-discovery means losing observations that no other instrument can currently make. That is not a technical judgment dressed in engineering language. That is a values judgment dressed that way. The real question is whether that preference deserves to win. Whether we should be honest about it when it does.
