The update arrives after users began physically destroying the LED indicator, the small light meant to signal when the camera is recording. This is what institutional logic does in a trust deficit. It treats the symptom as the problem and misses what the destruction actually means.
The unstated assumption is this. If Meta tells you the camera is off, you should believe it. A software signal, a glowing light, a promise embedded in the device's firmware—these are supposed to function as reliable proof that the lens isn't watching.
Meta's privacy record is not theoretical. The company has faced repeated fines for misleading users about data collection practices and class-action lawsuits over camera permissions it requested but users didn't clearly authorize. In the broader ecosystem of smart devices, camera vulnerabilities aren't edge cases—they're the baseline because researchers have demonstrated that software-based camera locks can be circumvented and hardware-level exploits exist. There is no consumer device where a user can actually verify what the camera is transmitting, when, or to whom.

The update will likely stop the tampering. It's an elegant escalation. Destroy the light and lose camera functionality entirely. Rational users won't do it. They'll leave the light intact.
But the epistemological problem remains untouched. On Meta's hardware, users have no independent way to verify camera state. No amount of software engineering solves that. The question becomes clear. At what point does a feature that requires trust become a feature that demands surrender?
