OpenAI is building a smart speaker—not a refined one, just a screenless box with environmental sensors that talks to you through ChatGPT.
The timing is instructive. Days before the announcement, Apple filed suit alleging OpenAI stole hardware secrets, and OpenAI denied it. But the legal theater obscures the actual question of whether anyone actually wants a dedicated physical object for conversing with an AI.
This is Microsoft's Cortana Band problem, restarted. In 2014, Microsoft released a wearable fitness tracker tied to its voice assistant, betting that users who had adopted Cortana in Windows would wear it and use it as a portal to continuous engagement. It flopped by 2016.
The structural failure wasn't execution—it was anthropological. Users tolerate voice assistants because they live inside things that already exist. Alexa is ambient in your kitchen speaker, Google Assistant hides in your phone. Siri waits in your pocket—all utilities distributed across devices you already need. A screenless speaker that exists only to host ChatGPT is something else entirely.
This is the opposite of friction reduction. This is friction institutionalized.

Until then, it's a 2014 Band with better conversation. The outcome is already written. The only variable is how much capital gets spent reaching the same conclusion.
