Laboratory router testing assumes that standardized performance predicts what happens when you plug it into your actual house.

Except the premise collapses the moment you do. A test environment with controlled materials and measured distances bears almost no resemblance to a space full of drywall and refrigerators and neighbors' routers and the specific geometry of your bedroom relative to the living room where you work.

The variance in performance between homes—different wall materials, different layouts, different electromagnetic chaos—routinely exceeds the variance between tested routers. The architecture of your space matters more than which router you buy.

Why Labs Mislead

A router that dominates in the lab might perform worse in your home than a cheaper model. Depending on factors the testing never measured. The careful hierarchy of recommendations collapses into conditional statements so precise they become impractical. This one works if your house has open floor plans, that one if you're in a building with concrete. The other if you're running 30 connected devices across 2,000 square feet. The testing industry refuses to say that their comparative rankings might be less instructive than useless.
