YouTube's 2012 redesign introduced the algorithm that watches what you watch, then removes your obligation to choose what comes next. Facebook's News Feed shifted the same year toward algorithmic prioritization—not showing you what your friends posted. What their engineers calculated would keep you touching the screen. Netflix added autoplay in 2015, and each change was a small rewire of friction.
Before this, pleasure-seeking worked differently. Reading a book meant finding it, opening it, tolerating early pages until you cared—and these weren't obstacles to overcome through discipline, they were the texture of how desire actually builds. The friction was the filter that separated hollow gratification from the kind that lands in your chest and stays. The technology didn't invent excess—it inverted the ratio. Now the lowest-effort pleasure is also the most engineered to reward repetition, while meaningful satisfaction remains sandpapered, effortful, gated behind the same friction that was always there.

This appears nowhere more clearly than in how creators themselves behave. Trevor Eckhart, the reverse-engineer who exposed how TikTok's algorithm prioritizes watch-time over everything else, documented that the platform's top performers don't use TikTok the way ordinary users do—they post, then they leave. They know what the feed does. When you find yourself reaching for the phone instead of the book, you're not failing at preference. You're standing in front of a door that was engineered to open more easily than any other door in your house. The problem isn't your choice, it's that someone recalibrated what choosing even means.
