When Noise Becomes the Fuel

Every machine fighting entropy is fighting the wrong battle.

We spend engineering hours shielding circuits from thermal noise — those random energy fluctuations that degrade performance and drain batteries. We treat heat as the enemy.

A team at MIT, led by physicist Jeff Gore, built a thermodynamic computer that does something radical. It harnesses those fluctuations instead of suppressing them. The device uses random thermal motion to perform computation because it stops treating noise as failure.

Running on friction instead

This inverts how we've always thought about reliable systems. Since the 1940s, computer design has meant building walls against chaos — error correction codes, redundancy, cooling systems, shielding. Gore's team didn't eliminate that gap. They collapsed it.

By letting the system operate closer to thermal equilibrium, where fluctuations are larger and the boundary between signal and noise dissolves, they found that computation still happens. It just happens differently. The process is slower, probabilistic, and messier. There's a parallel in how serious creative work actually develops. The writers and artists who do their deepest work often operate in what looks like chaos to outsiders.

The conventional assumption is that discipline means eliminating interference. This includes protected time, a controlled environment, and distraction removal. But they're not eliminating noise. They're working in proximity to it, letting accident and constraint and interruption become part of the generative process. The friction becomes the material.

The thermodynamic computer teaches something that creative practitioners already know but rarely articulate. Efficiency doesn't come from eliminating all the variables you don't control. It comes from building a system that functions through them instead of despite them.

The question isn't whether you can keep the noise out. It's whether you've designed your practice to run on it.
