The Large Hadron Collider is shutting down after 18 years to be upgraded.
The physics community treats this as a natural sequel to a successful run—the way you'd expect a beloved show to get a better budget for season two. But that framing assumes the LHC earned its $9 billion price tag and its 3.
The problem is that bet is contested among the people whose opinion actually matters. Not all of them are convinced the energy-frontier collider approach was the right path at all.
The Higgs boson, found in 2012, remains the LHC's signature achievement—one discovery in 18 years. Physicists wanted to see signs of supersymmetry, dark matter candidates, extra dimensions, anything to point toward physics beyond the Standard Model. Instead, they found the thing they were looking for and then mostly nothing. No exotic particles.
Meanwhile, alternative approaches went underfunded. These included precision measurement experiments, axion detectors, and neutrino observatories. These aren't flashy and don't require building a 17-mile tunnel under Switzerland. But some physicists think they're where the real new physics is hiding—and that the field locked itself into an expensive institutional path the way a studio commits to a franchise because the machinery already exists.
The High-Luminosity upgrade will smash particles harder, look for rarer events, give the collider one more chance to find something transformative. Maybe it works. Maybe physics breaks open in ways the existing model can't contain.
Or maybe the LHC is finally, precisely what it appears to be. It is a monument to one particular bet about how to do science, refurbished and sent back into the ring not because we know it will pay off. Because abandoning it would mean admitting we built it wrong.
The question now is whether physicists are upgrading a tool or just feeding an institution.
