When the Crown Endorses the Contested

How Institutions Disappear Their Politics

Institutions love the ceremonial meeting because it lets them have a position without announcing one.

The Queen received J.

This is what Bourdieu called symbolic violence. The crown doesn't declare support for Rowling's position.

How institutions disappear the political

When an institution frames something as being about books and reading—genuinely uncontroversial goods—the endorsement becomes hard to see. No one has to take a side because everyone already has. This happens constantly.

A meeting framed as being about books is actually about whether the crown stands with you or against you—and pretending it's just about books is the whole trick.

Rowling hasn't been banned from anywhere and millions still love her books—but millions don't, and that's a genuine cultural fracture. In that context, a royal audience isn't neutral.
