Investors see computational acceleration as the missing piece in life sciences. What they're actually betting on, though the assumption never gets named, is simpler and more fragile. That speed is the problem.
The entire sector rests on this premise. It aims to make molecular screening faster, run more compounds through virtual models, use machine learning to predict which molecules will bind to targets. Cut the screening phase from years to months. Then you've solved drug discovery. Then you get breakthroughs.
Except the actual bottleneck in drug discovery hasn't been computational speed since at least 2010. It's Phase 2 clinical failure. After a drug passes lab tests and early human trials, it often fails in the expensive middle stage where you're testing real efficacy in real patients. The failure rate there has stayed stubbornly high for a decade. AI accelerates nothing about why a compound that worked in vitro doesn't work in a living human.
A startup can show investors faster compound screening. That's real, demonstrable, quantifiable. A startup cannot show investors that it's solved Phase 2 failure rates.
This isn't a minor distinction. Pharma insiders know it. The question they're actually debating—whether AI addresses clinical validation, the true constraint—lives nowhere in the venture pitch. Instead you get speed narratives, efficiency language, the comfort of a problem that looks solvable because you can measure it.
Consider the structural mirage. A startup can show investors faster compound screening. That's real, demonstrable, quantifiable. A startup cannot show investors that it's solved Phase 2 failure rates. No one can, yet.
This is how optimization works in markets where you can't measure what matters. You optimize what you can see. You get very good at the wrong thing. The startup landscape rewards the entrepreneur who can instrumentalize speed while the clinician knows that speed, in isolation, doesn't move the needle.
The question becomes personal the moment you look at your own work. What are you optimizing that's measurable but orthogonal to what actually matters?
